An increase in the number of people researching their Scottish family history and other ancestors online has helped Brightsolid become a profitable business. Brightsolid has recently announced that it made a profit of just over £2m on sales of £13m compared to a loss of £2m and sales of £7m in the previous year.

Brightsolid owns Findmypast.com and operates the
Scotlandspeople website in partnership between the General Register Office for Scotland. Scotlandspeople has almost one million registered users and is growing by about 10,000 new members per month.

Brightsolid also purchased the Genesreunited site from ITV in 2009 although the Office of Fair Trade (OFT) referred the acquisition to the Competition Commission. The OFT were concerned about the restriction in choice of genealogical information online with the loss of Genesreunited and feared that there would only be two main choices for consumers either
Brightsolid or Ancestry. Recent noises however suggest the deal will go ahead however a formal announcement is not expected until later in the year.
